How Does BOTOX Work?

When you squint, smile, frown, or make any other facial expression, tiny muscles contract, causing the skin to fold. These movements happen hundreds of times a day, every day of your life. Gradually, lines such as crow’s feet, frown lines, and horizontal forehead wrinkles develop.

BOTOX, along with Dysport® and XEOMIN®, minimize these wrinkles and fine lines by relaxing the muscles used to make certain expressions. These neuromodulators block nerve signals to muscles in the treatment area, temporarily relaxing the muscles. At our practice, we use pinpoint precision for BOTOX treatments to ensure the results look natural.

Even though BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN work the same way, some differences may make one product better for you than the others.

Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?

BOTOX is the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world, and most women and men concerned with dynamic wrinkles can benefit from injections. The best candidates are usually seeing the first fine lines and wrinkles, and their skin retains much of its elasticity. It’s also important to have reasonable expectations about the results.

BOTOX is approved by the FDA for a wide range of cosmetic and medical uses. Other off-label uses of BOTOX can create a slimmer jawline for people with an overdeveloped masseter muscle (the muscle used for chewing). It’s also used for an increasingly popular “lip flip” treatment that creates the appearance of a fuller upper lip

What’s the Difference Between BOTOX and Dermal Fillers?

BOTOX treats the lines created by repeated facial expressions, called dynamic wrinkles, by disabling muscles. On the other hand, dermal fillers add volume under the skin to smooth lines, folds, or hollows that develop as bone and soft tissue diminish over time. Many patients get both BOTOX and fillers to address these different concerns.

How Much Does BOTOX Cost?

$14 Per Unit

The cost of BOTOX injections in Atlanta depends on the treatment area or areas, if you want to combine it with other procedures, and other factors. BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN are priced slightly differently. Both Nurse Hagopian and Dr. Hagopian customize each neuromodulator procedure and provides a personalized pricing estimate as part of your consultation.

How Long Do BOTOX Results Last?

BOTOX results typically last for 3 to 4 months. XEOMIN and Dysport tend to show results earlier than BOTOX, and the effects last about the same amount of time. You can maintain the results of your treatments with periodic injections every 4 months or so.

What Is Recovery After BOTOX Like?

There is no downtime after getting BOTOX injections, but that doesn’t mean you should resume all your normal activities immediately following your appointment. You can expect some mild redness, swelling, and maybe a little bit of tenderness at the injection sites during the first hour or so after the injections. These side effects are typically very mild, so if you get injections during your lunch hour, it’s unlikely anyone will notice. Still, you should avoid going to the gym or taking a run for 24 hours after the injections. Also, it’s important to avoid rubbing the treatment area.
